The Russian colonization of areas east of the Urals is different from Western colonies in the following ways:

It didn’t involve maritime transport. Hence, waterways didn’t mark a natural border between the mainland and the colonies, and made the current arrangement look more like England vs Scotland & Wales than Denmark vs Greenland. Once we crossed the Bering Strait and went to Alaska, things went increasingly complicated, and we had to abort the project.

We didn’t have to face a colonial rivalry, like Britain versus Spain in America. There was also little tradition of documenting things. As as result, atrocities like the ones committed during the repeated clashes with the Chukchis, the Russian-Injun War in Alaska in 1802-05 or the Unangan massacre in 1776 remained at the far periphery of public knowledge, at best. Inside Russia, it is considered an act of anti-patriotic heresy to draw parallels between our handling of Asian and American aborigines, and the European colonization of Americas.

The Russian colonial tradition has always put emphasis on taxation and patrolling the perimeter, and little else. The State’s presence in the colonies was long confined to a few logistical hubs, just like in the times of Varangians. The building of Trans-Siberian railroad was the first major initiative of the Empire to pro-actively colonize these territories. As a a result, imperial colonization was superficial, non-intrusive and episodical. Which is reflected in our public perception as a process of benevolent, gradual, harmonious dissolution of smaller ethnic groups within the Russian nation.

Using the words “colony” and “colonization” as applied to territories east of the Urals is bad taste in Russia. We use instead the words “appropriation” (osvoyénie), “settlement”/”population” (zaselénie) and “development” (razvítiye). The art below illustrates how we view the process. You see a crowd of people of mixed Slavic, Turkic and Altaic ethnicities socializing and trading with each other. Many of them are wearing armor and weapons—but it’s nearly impossible to figure out who these people are armed against.
